Mitchell student takes part in Doodle 4 Google event in NYC

Angela Schleich didn’t win the Doodle 4 Google competition, but she has a memorable tale to tell.

Angela, a Mitchell Middle School seventh-grader, was the South Dakota winner of the competition, which drew 114,000 submissions.

She earned a trip to New York City Thursday, where the winner and four national finalists were named. The prize included an all-expenses-paid trip for two and Angela planned to go with her parents, Bob and Lori Schleich, of Mitchell.

Second-grader Dylan Hoffman of Caledonia, Wis., is the national winner. His doodle “Pirate Times” was featured on the U.S. Google homepage Friday.

With his win, Dylan earned a $30,000 college scholarship, a Chromebook computer and a $50,000 technology grant for his school. As an added bonus, Dylan’s doodle will grace the front of a special edition of the Crayola 64-crayon box, available this fall.

The four national finalists, who will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship.

After the awards ceremony, all 50 state winners unveiled an exhibition of their artwork at the New York Public Library, where their doodles will be displayed from May 18 through July 19. In addition, the artwork of all state finalists and winners will be displayed at exhibitions in their home states across the country over the summer.
