Three teams took home first-place finishes on a day where many area high school golfers got the opportunity to scope out the course they’ll compete at for their region meets at pre-region tournaments Monday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.
The Parkston and South Central girls and the Kimball boys finished atop of their respective regions, but Monday’s meet was only a practice round for the regional meet. The Region 4B girls’ and boys’ meet is Friday at Lakeview. The Region 3A girls’ meet is Monday at Lakeview.
“When there wasn’t pre-regions, we would come play the course the night before regions,” South Central golfer Teresa Opbroek said after her round. “Now it’s easier to get everybody out here and get a feel for the course.”
In the Region 3A girls’ standings Monday, Parkston had the top-four finishers in the individual standings with Sydney Bormann leading the charge with an 82. Jordan Bormann also scored an 82 and Logan Wagner and Taylor Bormann took third and fourth with scores of 83 and 89, respectively.
In the Region 4B boys’ standings Kimball finished 18 strokes ahead of second-place Platte-Geddes.
Gregory’s Paul Taggart took first in the Region 4B individual standings with an 82. Kimball’s Dylan Konechne also recorded an 82 on the day.
Full Region 4B girls’ results were not available when this edition went to press, but Gregory’s Taylor Anshutz won the individual standings.
Although many golfers are familiar with Lakeview, some said having a competition on the course the week of regions helps to create fairness among golfers.
“I think it makes it a lot more of an even playing field,” Tripp-Delmont’s Payton Schafers said. “Everyone has played the course before and knows what to expect.”
Schafers said although the pre-region meet doesn’t have the same pressure as the regional tournament, there still is something to play for.
“You’re not taking it as seriously, but you still are placing and want to do well,” she said.
Andes Central assistant coach Randy Winckler wants his golfers to use the pre-regions as a way to get familiar with Lakeview.
“I just want them to try and get used to the course,” he said. “We’ve played it a few times, but we want them to test some things out and try some different things.”
The course had some added challenges Monday, as weekend storms created some challenges for golfers.
“There are a lot of branches, so you have to move stuff and the greens are playing a little slower,” Schafers said.
“It’s really wet and it’s hard to hit out of the wet spots,” Andes Central golfer Krista Winckler said.
