ALEXANDRIA — Funding to support a Hanson Community Library project for which ground was broken Tuesday came from four sources: a fundraising committee, a Community Development Block Grant, the City of Alexandria and the Hanson School District.
The fundraising committee has raised $284,000 and plans to continue its efforts during construction.
The Community Development Block Grant was awarded to the city of Alexandria in the amount of $300,000.
The city of Alexandria is providing $100,000.
The balance of the project, estimated to be around $400,000, will be paid for by the Hanson School District through its capital outlay fund.
According to South Dakota codified law, the capital outlay fund of the school district is a fund provided to “meet expenditures that result in the acquisition or lease of or additions to real property, plant or equipment. Such expenditure shall be for land, existing facilities, improvement of grounds, construction of facilities, additions to facilities, remodeling of facilities or for the purchase or lease of equipment.”
Money in the capital outlay fund comes from property taxes assessed within the Hanson County School District.
Hanson School District Superintendent Jim Bridge said the project won’t cost local residents a dime.
“There will be no new taxes,” Bridge said. “It was a proud day to be part of such an awesome event for our community.”
