Mitchell tennis team handles Brookings 9-0

BROOKINGS — The Mitchell High School tennis team cruised past Brookings in an Eastern South Dakota Conference match Tuesday.

Mitchell won all singles matches and all doubles matches to sweep the Bobcats 9-0.

“Our singles play was strong, but this time we showed some improvement in our doubles,” said Mitchell assistant coach Chad Larson, who was coaching in place of Pat Moller. “We’re playing with much more patience in matches and not always going for the big shot.”

Moller, the head coach, was in Washington D.C. for the Kernels’ second straight day of competition. Monday, Mitchell split a home triangular against Aberdeen Central and Sioux Falls Washington. In that competition, the Kernels beat Aberdeen but won one of three doubles matches. In the loss to Washington, the Kernels were swept in doubles competition.

Tuesday, the doubles teams — just like each singles flight — dominated their competition.

“Brookings is a young team, but we are too,” Larson said. “I think our boys are getting a little bit more confident every day we play, but I don’t think we’re satisfied with where we’re at yet.”

Mitchell is 7-5 overall and 3-3 in ESD play. The Kernels’ next competition is Saturday in Madison.
