Mitchell split a pair of matches in a high school tennis triangular Monday at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.

The Kernels beat Aberdeen Central 6-3 but fell to Sioux Falls Washington 9-0.

“We started out playing really well in singles against Aberdeen,” said Mitchell assistant coach Chad Larson, who was acting as head coach Monday in place of the absent Pat Moller. “The boys came out with a lot of confidence and they were very focused and determined. They hit a lot of quality shots.”

No. 1 Jacob Cersosimo, No. 3 Taylor Moore, No. 4 Kanin Nelson, No. 5 Tate Crago and No. 6 Alex Hegg each picked up singles wins for Mitchell, which has won 6 of 11 matches this season. The Kernels are also 2-3 in Eastern South Dakota Conference play.

The No. 3 doubles team of Beau Brown and Brenden Lehr had a 10-7 win against Aberdeen. No other doubles team was able to pick up a win Monday.

“We struggled in doubles, but we’re going to continue to work on that in practice, so by the end of the season we can be stronger in area,” Larson said.

Larson said Sioux Falls Washington is a state-champion contender this season.

“They’re experienced, and last year they were the runner-up at the state tournament,” he said. “This year, they’ve beaten O’Gorman, who was the state champion last season, so they’re the real deal.”

Larson said the No. 2 singles match of Brown vs. Dobby O’Donnell was especially entertaining. O’Donnell won 11-9.

“Beau was up against one of the best in his flight this year,” Larson said. “I’m proud of his effort. He plays hard every match and expects to win every time he goes out there.”

Mitchell plays at 4 p.m. Brookings today in a dual against the Bobcats for its next action.
