The Mitchell boys’ tennis team split a pair of matches Friday at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.

The Kernels fell to Huron 5-4 but were able to come back and win their second match 9-0 against Madison.

“We just let that one get away from us,” head coach Pat Moller said about Mitchell’s match against Huron. “Huron’s got a veteran team, and they looked like they were the more experienced team. We looked like a young team.”

Mitchell (5-4) got singles wins from Jacob Cersosimo (No. 1), Beau Brown (No. 2), Taylor Moore (No. 3) and Alex Hegg (No. 4), but the Kernels struggled in their doubles matches losing all three games.

“Our doubles teams just didn’t play very well,” Moller said. “We played Huron last week and got beat by them, and we were hoping we could beat them, but we just couldn’t pull it off.”

Despite the loss, the Kernels were able to come back and sweep their second match against Madison.

Cersosimo and Moore teamed up to win 10-5 at No. 1 doubles, Kanin Nelson and Hegg won the No. 2 doubles 10-2, and Brown and Brenden Lehr took No. 3 doubles 10-1.

“We showed a lot of character by coming back from a really disappointing loss,” Moller said. “We just need to continue to learn and get better every day at practice, and hopefully at the end of the season when it counts we’ll be ready to go.”

The Kernels’ next match is Monday, when they host a triangular with Aberdeen Central and Sioux Falls Washington. Play begins at 1 p.m. at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.
