ABERDEEN (AP) — Former Northern State University basketball Don Meyer says women's college basketball wouldn't have been the same without Tennessee coach Pat Summitt.

Summitt is stepping down from her longtime position as she battles Alzheimer's.

Meyer tells the media that Summitt has always wanted to learn and has ideas, but she has bedrock principles that doesn't back down from. He says that's what makes a great coach.

Meyer, who won as a coach won 923 college basketball games, calls Summitt the "John Wooden of women's basketball."

He says she's been a great role model for a lot of young men and women.

Meyer retired from coaching in 2010.
