Chris Bono will succeed Jason Liles, who resigned last month after 19 seasons in which he became the program's career wins leader with 148 victories.
Bono won a national title at 150 pounds in 1996 and was runner-up a year later. He was an alternate for the 2000 U.S. Olympic team and a member of U.S. teams that won world championships in 2001, 2002 and 2005.
He has served as an assistant head coach at Iowa State and as a head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga.
