ND wants Missouri River management changes

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota officials say last year's flooding changed the Missouri River, and the Army Corps of Engineers must also change its management.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple said during a public meeting in Bismarck on Monday that sediment downstream of the city will be a problem, and he wants a channel maintenance plan for the upper stretch of the Missouri.

Dalrymple also says the corps should be prepared to buy out farmland in downstream states protected by levees and move the dikes back to ease constriction.

Jody Farhat with the corps says it's clear the river is different, and the agency will continue to be flexible in its management.

The corps is holding river management meetings throughout the Missouri River basin. A meeting is planned Tuesday in Pierre.
