Incumbency has proved an advantage for U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., in regard to fundraising in the first quarter of 2012.

The first-term congresswoman raised more than twice the money raised by a potential Democratic challenger.

Noem reports raising $354,677 compared to $168,000 for Matt Varilek, a former staffer for U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D. Fundraising figures for Democrat Jeff Barth were not immediately available.

Varilek has raised $272,000 since entering the race in December, while Noem reports having $1.18 million in cash on hand.

Despite the campaign cash gap, Varilek expressed pleasure. “I’m proud of our fundraising progress,” he said.

Noem credits grassroots support from across the state for her fundraising success. “I’m so thankful for the outpouring of support.”
