CHEERS to the anonymous pledge of $275,000 received by Avera Brady Health and Rehab to be used for the entity’s renovation campaign. The Mitchell nursing home/assisted living center announced the donation last week, saying it is from a local person but who wishes to make the donation quietly. Let us take a moment to speak specifically to this anonymous person: This donation speaks volumes about the size of your heart, and although we do not know you, we appreciate anyone who makes such a thoughtful gift.

CHEERS to the continued work to expand the bike/walking path that winds its way through Mitchell and around the lake. A report in The Daily Republic last week noted that work on a new stretch — near Lake Mitchell — began late in the winter. The new path addition is being funded through monies donated by the state Department of Game, Fish and Parks, and is a project that can be used by many.

HISSES to the suddenly chilly weather that has hit the region. Oh, don’t get us wrong — we are fully in favor of the precipitation. The more, the merrier. But we could do without the suddenly frigid breezes that seem to be accompanying the rainfall. After our moderate winter and previously steamy spring, the thermometer dropped into the 20s for a bit last week. Alas, such is life in South Dakota, the Land of Infinite Variety.

HISSES to methamphetamine and the criminals that make it. Not only is it dangerous to those who consume it, but meth is dangerous to others who happen to be around while it’s being made. That’s why we are so disappointed whenever we hear that another meth lab has been discovered in our area. Last week, two people from Delmont pleaded guilty to keeping a place for the sale/use of methamphetamine. If this type of activity can happen in a tiny town like Delmont, it can happen anywhere. Let’s all be on the lookout to try to curb this dangerous activity. Remember: The Mitchell Area Crime Stoppers hotline is 996-1700; not only are all calls anonymous, but they can result in a reward, too.

CHEERS to Dakota Wesleyan University golfer Dani Bellet, who is not only one of the best golfers in the Great Plains Athletic Conference but also the nation. Bellet, a Black Hills native, is a senior at Wesleyan and is the most decorated golfer in GPAC history. Later this spring, she will contend for a national title and if she does it, she will be the first from the conference to do so. She’s been great for DWU, and we wish her well in this endeavor.
