Mitchell Christian High School and Mount Vernon are looking to form a co-op in boys’ soccer for the up-coming school year.

Mount Vernon and MCHS have turned in paperwork to the South Dakota High School Activities Association, and it will be reviewed at board of directors meeting Tuesday in Pierre.

MCHS Athletic Director Bob Lemon said Mount Vernon approached him after its request to have a co-op team with Mitchell High School was denied.

“We voted on the idea in March at our school board meeting after the board had time to get some feedback from our families in the school,” Lemon said. “The school board then voted unanimously to accept the co-op offer.”

Lemon said Mount Vernon wanted student Phillip Millar to be able to play soccer in the fall, and this co-op could potentially be part of a larger vision for soccer with a number of area schools. Lemon said Millar was the only player he knew of from Mount Vernon interested in playing soccer in the cooperative.

“I think we realized that smaller A and B schools are not going to bring in soccer teams on their own,” Lemon said. “If we can bring on Mount Vernon, and let it be known that if there are kids out there that want an opportunity to play, we are open to that.”

Lemon said if any school had interest in creating a co-op in girls’ soccer, MCHS would be open to that idea as well.

“Our numbers are such that we can build our pro-gram through other schools,” Lemon said. “We’re small in numbers, and we don’t have enough to have a full junior varsity team right now, but that’s something we’d really like to have in the future.”
