SIOUX FALLS (AP) — The training academy at the South Dakota State Penitentiary is being named for a corrections officer killed last year during a botched prison escape.
Thursday marks the one year anniversary of the death of Ronald "RJ" Johnson, and a dedication of the prison's training building is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Warden Doug Weber says Johnson showed honor, courage and dedication, and he says it's fitting that that all current and future staff members will receive their training in a building named in Johnson's memory.
The interior of the building has recently been upgraded, and a new sign and flowers are being added to the exterior.
Three inmates were charged in Johnson's death. Two have been sentenced to death and the third to life in prison.
