Mitchell Superintendent Joe Graves said Tuesday that Tom Young will be paid $6,676 to coach the Mitchell Kernels boys’ basketball team for the 2012-2013 school year.
That amount includes $4,803 in base pay plus another $1,873 for 13 years of coaching experience credit. The experience credit can be awarded to coaches at up to 3 percent of their pay per year, but it’s capped at 13 years. Young has 20 years of total head coaching experience — 18 at Mitchell Christian and two at Hanson High School.
Coach Gary Munsen earned $6,610 this year, Graves said.
The Mitchell Board of Education unanimously approved Young’s hire Monday, but the exact salary amount of his contract was not immediately available. Young, an optometrist, will not teach in the district.
Activities Director Geoff Gross said Young’s job officially begins the Monday after Thanksgiving and runs through the playoff season, but coaches realize their sports have pre-season demands.
“As the years go by, the demands of out-of-season preparation have increased, and that’s the same for every sport,” Gross said.
Young will begin working this summer with pre-season clinics and camps, Gross said.
