Tom Young acknowledged he is interested in the open Mitchell High School boys’ basketball coaching position Thursday night.

Young, a Mitchell High School graduate who played for longtime coach Gary Munsen in the 1970s, declined further comment.

“I’m interested in the job, but there’s no final decisions made at this point,” said Young, a former Mitchell Christian boys’ basketball coach who retired from coaching before the start of the current school year.

Young, who has 327 career wins, helped MCHS to a state championship in 2003. In 2007, his MCHS team was the state runner-up.

When asked if a coach had been hired or offered the position Thursday night, Mitchell High School Activities Director Geoff Gross also declined comment.

“When we have a confirmation from a candidate that they want to take the job, I’ll get an immediate release out,” Gross said. “But I’m not going to comment on that until we get to that point.”

Gross said the school district “is getting really close” to a hire.

“We’re waiting to get things confirmed,” Gross said. “Hopefully, the next couple of days.”
