Davison County Auditor Susan Kiepke said Wednesday that county Democrats have the option of selecting a candidate to replace District 2 County Commissioner Jerry Fischer on the fall ballot.
Fischer, in a surprise announcement Tuesday, withdrew his candidacy. He has served District 2 for 12 years and intends to complete his term, which expires at the end of the year.
“We will certainly look at the options and see if there’s somebody out there who wants to step up,” said Dave Mitchell, chairman of the Davison County Democratic Party.
Mitchell said he only recently learned that the county central committee of a political party may appoint a candidate to fill the place of a filed candidate who steps aside and is unopposed in the primary election.
“We’ll have to determine if there’s anybody who wants to be appointed, in which case we’ll take the appropriate action,” Mitchell said.
Republican Randy Reider has filed to run for the seat and is unopposed in the June 5 primary.
Mitchell said Democrats in residing in District 2 who are interested in running should call him at 996-5977.
