A Mount Vernon woman was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to simple assault Tuesday at the Davison County Public Safety Center in Mitchell.

Corey Halweg, 43, was arrested Oct. 9 after an altercation with her boyfriend, Dustin Feistner, at his Mitchell residence while both were intoxicated. Halweg cut Feistner’s ear with a steak knife during the altercation, causing an injury serious enough to require medical attention.

Judge Sean O’Brien sentenced Halweg to two years of probation, a $300 fine and a minimum of six months on the state 24/7 Sobriety program.

Despite granting probation in lieu of a prison sentence, O’Brien was pessimistic about Halweg’s future.

“You have a serious drinking problem that you don’t want to address,” O’Brien told Halweg. “I don’t think there is anything I’m going to say or do that is going to change your behavior.”
