Hurdling into the outdoor track season: Teams enjoying nice weather, get rolling on track, field season

The Bridgewater-Emery track team and other area teams were excited to be able to compete outside Tuesday, despite the windy conditions.

SCOTLAND — The Bridgewater-Emery track team and other area teams were excited to be able to compete outside Tuesday, despite the windy conditions.

Tuesday was the day many track and field teams enjoyed the fresh air, nice conditions and were able to feel the breeze.

“It’s a lot better this year than it was last year,” Bridgewater-Emery coach Jeff VanLeur said. “The warm temperatures have helped everyone get outside, and at a small meet like this, we can get everyone on the track, so it’s good for us.”

VanLeur said his team is looking to compensate for the loss of a few athletes his team lost to graduation las year, but he added he’s confident some athletes that will be able to fill their shoes.

Bridgewater-Emery’s Colman Haiar finished in first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.59 seconds and also took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.5.

“The last couple of weeks, I’ve been really excited for track,” Haiar said. “I’ve been trying hard during practice and it showed pretty well in my events.”

Freeman Academy head coach Suzanne Koerner agreed with VanLeur, saying she’s glad her team was able to come out and enjoy the nice weather.

“It feels pretty good to have a season where we can actually have some meets,” Koerner said. “The weather helps us train the way we want to train, so we’ve really enjoyed that, because we haven’t had that in the last couple of years.”

Freshman Clara Koerner, who finished in first place for Freeman Academy in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 37.69 seconds and added another first-place finish in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5.54.05, said she was happy with her performance.

“It felt really good to be outside and I’m glad we have good weather this year, it really helps with the training,” Clara Koerner said. “I didn’t really set any goals for this season. I just want to keep getting better.”

Scotland coach Gary Pepper said hosting the invitational is always fun for his team and it was a nice change from the past couple years to be able to have such good weather.

“It’s just nice for the kids to be able to get outside and compete. It’s been a really nice spring,” Pepper said. “I know it was a little windy out here, but the kids are excited to get out here and compete, so we’re looking forward to a good season.”
