SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell high school baseball team lost its first game of the year Tuesday, falling to Sioux Falls Roosevelt 10-2 at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls.
Mitchell left-hander Josh Schmidt got the start, throwing four innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out eight batters.
Kernels coach Luke Norden said his team was too passive offensively. Mitchell had two hits all game, both of which came in the top of the seventh inning. Lakin Neugebauer and Calvin Limberg each had one hit. Neugebauer also had a stolen base and Limberg had an RBI.
“We watched way too many strikes,” Norden said. “The two pitchers we saw threw fastballs and didn’t have an overpowering offspeed. We just need to be more aggressive at the plate.”
After Schmidt was pulled, Jared Schmidt threw one inning and gave up three runs on three hits and a walk. Neugebauer threw the sixth inning, giving up four runs on four hits.
Mitchell (2-1) is back in action at 6 p.m. Thursday, when it hosts Corsica/Stickney at Drake Field.
