A train that derailed in Mitchell in January caused nearly $120,000 in damage.
Seven cars of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train derailed just west of the overpass bridge on Burr Street on Jan. 14. One car tipped while the other six remained upright.
According to a report released recently by the Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration, the cars that derailed caused $56,857 in equipment damages and $62,000 in structure damage.
An engineer and a conductor were operating the train when it derailed while pulling out of the yard going 12 mph, the report says.
