LARCHWOOD, Iowa (AP) — A South Dakota pilot who died in the crash of a small plane in northwest Iowa has been identified as a Sioux Falls doctor.

LARCHWOOD, Iowa (AP) — A South Dakota pilot who died in the crash of a small plane in northwest Iowa has been identified as a Sioux Falls doctor.

Lyon County authorities say 57-year-old Robert Akins died Wednesday afternoon when his single-seat plane crashed and flipped while attempting to land on a grass airstrip at an airport near Larchwood. He was dead at the scene.

According to media reports, the aircraft is registered with the Federal Aviation Administration as a homemade experimental plane built in 1991.

The FAA was beginning an investigation on Thursday.
