Black Hills forest fire burns 515 acres; not contained

RAPID CITY (AP) — A forest fire in the Black Hills National Forest in southwest South Dakota has burned 515 acres and is not yet contained.

RAPID CITY (AP) — A forest fire in the Black Hills National Forest in southwest South Dakota has burned 515 acres and is not yet contained.

Forest Service spokeswoman Bonnie Jones says the Apple Fire is in an uninhabited area and no buildings or power lines are threatened. There have been no reports of injuries.

Jones says the fire was started by lightning. Crews on the ground and in the air have been battling it.

Jones says the Apple Fire is the largest so far this season in the Black Hills. The area burned is about eight-tenths of a square mile.
