VERMILLION (AP) — A unit of the South Dakota National Guard has learned it will not be deployed to Afghanistan after all.

Forty-eight members of the Guard's 730th Area Support Medical Company learned this week that they would not be deployed in July.

The change in deployment status comes as a result of the gradual draw down of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The Vermillion-based unit is made up of combat medics, medical doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
