Dickerson's grand slam leads team over Mount Vernon-Plankinton-Woonsocket

MOUNT VERNON — The Wagner-Avon-Lake Andes high school baseball team got a grand slam in extra innings to beat Mount Vernon-Plankinton-Woonsocket 5-3 Monday night.
Derek Dickerson hit a grand slam to left field in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-all tie for Wagner-Avon-Lake Andes. He also picked up the win in relief of Alex Kocer, who started the game and threw seven innings and gave up three hits and no earned runs. He struck out 12 batters and also had a double at the plate.
Dickerson recorded two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win. He had one walk and one strikeout.
MVPW’s Cody London had 15 strikeouts in the no decision. He allowed one hit, no earned runs and he walked two batters. He pitched six innings and was relieved by Deric Denning, who took the loss after throwing two innings. Denning gave up one hit — the grand slam — and he struck out four.
Justin Davis was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Cody Renken had a single for MVPW’s only three hits.
The team scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Jake Sonne hit a two-out ground ball to the shortstop, resulting in a fielding error to allow Davis to score. Davis opened the inning with a double to left field.
Wagner-Avon-Andes Central, which took the JV game 13-3, hosts Parkston on Monday in Wagner.
MVPW (1-1) hosts Parkston on Sunday in Mount Vernon for its next action.
