BROOKINGS (AP) — State climatologist Dennis Todey says a national volunteer network is looking for more people in South Dakota to track precipitation across the state.
Todey says the volunteers measure and file reports after rain, hail and snow falls. They are part of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network.
Todey says reporting by local volunteers is essential in tracking the variability of rainfall. He says the National Weather Service has issued flash flood warnings based on volunteer's reports on rainfall.
Volunteers must be willing to take daily precipitation readings between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and report the results on the Internet.
Information is available on the volunteer network's website.
