Thirty-six of state’s 66 counties lack stoplights

PIERRE — Did you know there are counties in South Dakota without stoplights? The next question is harder. How many counties?
The answer, according to the state Department of Transportation, is 36.
That’s more than half of the 66 counties statewide.
The question came up Thursday after a project was approved for traffic light maintenance in Todd County, at the intersection of U.S. 18 and Main Street in Mission. The counties without stoplights, in alphabetical order, are:
• Aurora;
• Bon Homme, Brule, Buffalo;
• Campbell, Clark, Corson;
• Deuel, Douglas;
• Edmunds;
• Faulk;
• Gregory;
• Haakon, Hamlin, Hanson, Harding, Hutchinson, Hyde;
• Jackson, Jerauld, Jones;
• Kingsbury;
• Lyman;
• Marshall, McCook, McPherson, Mellette, Miner, Moody;
• Perkins, Potter;
• Roberts;
• Sanborn, Sully;
• Turner;
• Ziebach.
