HOT SPRINGS (AP) — Rangers at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota say they caught three people from Minnesota trying to steal about three dozen elk antlers last weekend, along with animal skulls and rocks.
Chief Ranger Mike Wilson says rangers have increased back-country patrols to combat the illegal taking of antlers that are shed by bull elk each year. Thieves sell the antlers to be used in decorations and furniture.
People who illegally take natural or cultural features from national parks face months of jail time and fines of up to $5,000.
