The Eastern South Dakota Conference held its annual spring meeting Wednesday at Mitchell High School.
The meeting takes place every year and focuses on what ESD President Dan Whalen calls the busy work of the conference.
The conference discusses dues, scheduling, technology, event sites, conference champions and other business issues at the annual meeting, although this year’s meeting also had a strong discussion of expansion.
The conference has looked into expansion in the past and considered Sturgis and Harrisburg as potential new members of the conference.
Sturgis has since joined the Black Hills Conference but Harrisburg’s acceptance to the ESD was expected to be looked into at the conference’s meeting.
Whalen, the athletic director at Pierre, said the conference is not disclosing any specifics from the meeting until later today.
“Right now, we’re not going to disclose anything,” he said. “We need to make sure everybody is in the loop.”
All eight ESD school’s athletic directors were in attendance — the ESD consists of Mitchell, Pierre, Brookings, Brandon Valley, Watertown, Yankton, Aberdeen Central and Huron — and had considered voting on Harrisburg’s entrance to the conference.
“It’s not like when you invite someone to dinner and they can just come right over,” Whalen said.
The other ESD athletic directors refused to comment on the specifics from the meeting.
“We aren’t giving out any information as far as expansion,” Whalen said.
Whalen also noted that the recent addition of an 11AAA Class in South Dakota football did not affect the scheduling aspect of the meeting because the extra class does not take effect until the fall of 2013.
