Final day state tournament basketball roundup: Krogman leads White River to title

ABERDEEN (AP) — Wyatt Krogman had 22 points to lead White River to a 52-43 win over Viborg-Hurley and the championship of the South Dakota boys Class B basketball tournament on Saturday.

Krogman made 10 of 15 free throws for the Tigers (25-1), who were appearing in their fifth straight state championship game. Nic Waln was 6-for-6 from the line and had 13 points.

White River made 21 of 28 free throws.

Dennis DeNeui had 18 points, including an 8-for-8 showing from the line for Viborg-Hurley (23-3). He was the only Cougar player in double figures.

Langford edges Sully Buttes 55-52

ABERDEEN (AP) — Kyle Johnson sparked Langford to a 55-52 victory over Sully Buttes in the third-place game of the South Dakota boys Class B basketball tournament on Saturday.

Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Lions (23-3). Dalton Lone and Bo Fries each chipped in with nine points.

Conner Uhlir scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the way for the Chargers (21-5). Jordan Lamb added 12 points.

Langford shot 46 percent from the field to 42 percent for Sully Buttes.

Dupree beats W-W for seventh place

ABERDEEN (AP) — Nate Widow scored 20 points as Dupree beat Wolsey-Wessington 57-52 Saturday in the seventh-place game at the South Dakota boys Class B basketball tournament.

Widow was 9-for-10 from the free throw line for the Tigers (22-4). Cooper Wall and Kash Deal had 13 points apiece.

Jalen Boomsma paced Wolsey-Wessington (20-6) with 13 points. Lorenzo Williams added 10.

St. Thomas More wins Class A title

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Skye Warwick helped St. Thomas More win another state title with a 63-56 victory over Dakota Valley in the championship game of the South Dakota boys Class A basketball tournanment on Saturday.

Warwick led three Cavaliers in double figures with 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers and dishing out four assists to lead St. Thomas More to its second straight state title. The back-to-back crowns give the Cavaliers four state titles in seven years.

Eric Hensch and Jeremy Henderson each added 14 points for St. Thomas More as they built a 32-24 halftime lead. The Cavaliers shot 67 percent from the field to 35 percent for Dakota Valley.

The Panthers (22-4) got 22 points apiece from Brody VanGinkel and Brock Bergmann.

Dell Rapids beats Aberdeen Roncalli

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Dell Rapids raced out to a big lead early and coasted to a 69-51 win over Aberdeen Roncalli Saturday in the third-place game at the South Dakota boys Class A basketball tournament.

The Quarriers (21-5) took a 14-0 lead before the Cavaliers (16-9) got on the scoreboard.

Cole Langer had 14 points, Bryce Koch 13 and Weston Hansen 11 for Dell Rapid, which shot 54 percent.

Aberdeen Roncalli was led by Ross Barton with 15 points and four assists, while Dominic King added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Tri-Valley beats Clark-Willow Lake

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Tri-Valley outscored Clark-Willow Lake 10-3 in overtime to beat the Cyclones 70-63 in the fifth-place game at the South Dakota boys Class A basketball tournament.

Tri-Valley (18-8) played five overtime periods in three games, including two each in the first two games.

Trae Bergh had 25 points and Brett Page 22 for the Mustangs. Page made all 11 of his free throws and the Mustangs were 21-for-25 from the line.

Skyler Flatten had 22 points for the Cyclones (17-8), who went 2-for-5 from the line. Garret Schmidt added 13 points.

Pierre edges SF Washington 80-76

RAPID CITY (AP) — Lane Severyn sparked Pierre to an 80-76 victory over Sioux Falls Washington in the third-place game of the South boys Class AA basketball tournament on Saturday.

Severyn hit 11 of 16 field goal attempts, including five 3-pointers, en route to a 30-point performance. He also grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and dished out four assists for the Governors (18-8).

Zach Hanson finished with 16 points and Joe Tetzlaff 11 for Pierre, helping Pierre open up a 24-9 first-quarter lead.

Joey Habtermariam paced Washington (15-11) with 27 points, and Justin Trett hit seven 3-pointers and scored 23 for the Warriors.

Habtermariam missed a potential game-tying jumper in the final minute for Washington before Hanson sealed the win with a pair of free throws.

Brookings beats SF Roosevelt

RAPID CITY (AP) — Alex Irvine led the way Saturday as Brookings defeated Sioux Falls Roosevelt 56-47 in the fifth-place game at the South Dakota boys Class AA basketball tournament.

Irvine was 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-7 from the line for 17 points for the Bobcats (17-7). He also had a game-high nine rebounds. Tanner Odegaard added two 3-pointers and 12 points.

Roosevelt (13-13) got 20 points, three 3-pointers and three assists from Tyler Howard, who was 7-for-11 from the field.

Howard was the only Rough Riders player with more than six points.

Huron beats RC Central 61-58

RAPID CITY (AP) — Cody Harris’ 3-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out and Huron escaped with a 61-58 double-overtime win over the Cobblers Saturday in the seventh-place game at the South Dakota boys Class B basketball tournament.

With Central trailing by three and time running out, Harris tried a long 3-pointer that rimmed in and out. Harris finished with 19 points for the Cobblers (9-16) and Robert Connot added 17.

Huron (16-11) got 20 points from Luke Carr and 10 from Spencer Stahly and Clark Wintle.

Both teams missed free throws in the closing seconds of regulation and overtime to extend the game.
