Kernels escape with overtime win over Roosevelt

RAPID CITY — Jade Miller had 23 points and 10 rebounds to help the Mitchell boys’ basketball team top Sioux Falls Roosevelt 64-60 in overtime Thursday at the first round of the Class AA state basketball tournament.

With the win, Mitchell advances to the semifinals, where the Kernels will play Pierre or Huron.

Brady Maxwell had 17 points and eight rebounds for Mitchell, which shot 46 percent from the field. Mitchell led by seven points after the first quarter, but Roosevelt outscored the Kernels 28-19 in the second and third quarters combined. Mitchell’s Matt Henriksen had 12 points, Tucker Volesky had nine and the Kernels had 12 overtime points to Roosevelt’s eight.
