21 JUMP STREET

The new action comedy puts Jonah Hill (“Superbad”) and Channing Tatum (“The Vow”) working as undercover cops at the local high school.

Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force, they are assigned to the secret Jump Street unit where they use their youthful appearances to go undercover as students in a local high school.

As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.

“21 Jump Street” opens nationally, including at the Luxury 5 Cinemas, Friday. 110 minutes.

It is rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, drug material, teen drinking and some violence.

RED TAILS

Courage has no color in this action drama starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard. As World War Two in Europe continues to take its toll on Allied forces, the Pentagon brass has no recourse but to consider unorthodox options — including the untried and untested African-American pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program.

Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, they are given the ultimate chance to show their courage. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies to fight for their country — and the fate of the free world.

“Red Tails” starts Friday at the Luxury 5 Cinemas. 125 minutes.

It is rated PG-13 for some sequences of war violence.

DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX

This classic tale by Dr. Seuss was brought to the screen by the creators of “Despicable Me.”

This 3D feature using cutting edge computer generated animation and effects is an adaptation of the classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope.

The animated adventure follows the journey of a 12-yearold as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

“Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” is held over. It is showing in 3D and 2D at alternating show times. 86 minutes.

It is rated PG for brief mild language.

JOHN CARTER

The new sci-fi adventure stars Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins who both previously starred in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

John Carter, a Civil War officer from Virginia, is transported to Mars and finds himself a captive of the savage green men from Thark.

Eventually, he rises to become the greatest warrior of all time, marries the beautiful Dejah Thoris, raises a family and embarks on numerous adventures.

The film stars Dominic West, best known for his role as detective Jimmy McNulty on HBO’s “The Wire.”

The film is based on Edgar Rice Burrough’s 11-volume Barsoom series of science fiction adventures.

“John Carter” is held over. It is showing in 3D and 2D at alternating show times. 132 minutes.

It is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action.

PROJECT X

This new comedy is from producer Todd Phillips, the director of “The Hangover.” Although it is a younger version of that earlier hit comedy, it is just as wild.

It follows three high school seniors, who feel they are anonymous, as they attempt to finally make a name for themselves.

Their idea is innocent enough: let’s throw a party that no one will forget. But nothing could prepare them for the way this party turns out. Word spreads quickly as dreams are ruined, records are blemished and legends are born.

“Project X” is held over. 88 minutes.

It is rated R for crude and sexual content throughout, nudity, drugs, drinking, pervasive language, reckless behavior and mayhem — all involving teens.

SAFE HOUSE

Oscar winner Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in the action-thriller.

An American traitor (Washington) has been taken to a location off the grid in South Africa, where he is being held by an inexperienced CIA employee (Reynolds).

After the safe house is attacked and the men escape, the young agent and his ruthless prisoner must survive the deadly underworld as the agency decides if it has another double agent on its hands.

“Safe House” is held over. 115 minutes.

It is rated R for strong violence throughout and some language.
