A Dante man is recovering from life-threatening injuries he suffered in a rollover crash Tuesday afternoon.

Johnny Ray Wynia, 18, was traveling north on Charles Mix County Road 5 around 4:30 p.m. when he failed to follow a curve in the road and his 1999 Ford F-250 pickup entered the west ditch as he approached the curve, said South Dakota State Trooper Mike Peterson.

Wynia attempted to get back on the road, but the pickup rolled, Peterson said.

The Avon Fire Department and Ambulance responded to the scene.

Firefighters extracted Wynia from the pickup using jaws of life-type equipment, Peterson said.

The Avon Ambulance transported Wynia to the Wagner Community Memorial Hospital, and he was airlifted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Wynia was not wearing his seat belt, Peterson said. The vehicle is considered a total loss.
