Starting Aug. 27, Mitchell Technical Institute will begin offering some of its most popular classes online.
The move is an attempt to offer programs to students whose schedules don’t allow them to attend regular day classes at MTI, President Greg Von Wald said.
“In the past we’ve had inquiries from people who are interested in our programs, but they have jobs or other family demands. These new online programs are an attempt to meet those needs.”
The programs culminate in a diploma for one-year courses, or an associate’s degree for students who choose to finish a two-year course of study.
Complete courses of study to be offered online this fall are: speech language pathology assistant, medical office professional, and industrial controls.
Small business management and administrative office specialist will be offered as one-year programs.
“Students, whether on-campus or online, will take the same classes in an area of study,” MTI spokeswoman Julie Brookbank said, but online course loads will be lighter — about 12 credits, versus 16 to 18 credits for on-campus students — to make them more manageable for remote students.
“The courses are the same, just spread out to make them more manageable,” she said.
Students can apply immediately and applications will be accepted until Aug. 27, the first day of the fall semester. To date, about 25 students have expressed interest in various programs.
Unlike many schools that charge a premium fee for distance learning, MTI won’t charge extra for its online programs. “The tuition will be the same as if you came to our school,” Brookbank said.
Students are charged about $125 per credit hour, plus school fees. A two-year course of study— about 60 to 70 credit hours — at MTI currently runs between $10,000 to $11,000, Brookbank said. Thirty-two credit hour diploma classes will cost about half that.
