LETTER: Newspaper shows bias against DWU
The first article goes into detail about the young man being a student at Dakota Wesleyan University and a member of the football team. The second article says nothing about the young man’s workplace or school affiliation.By: Robert Tatina and Randy Sprung, Dakota Wesleyan University
To the Editor:
On Page A2 of the March 3 edition of The Daily Republic was an article by a Daily Republic reporter about a young man who was arrested “ … for reckless driving and eluding a police officer.” On Page A3, the same reporter describes the arrest of another young man “ … for DUI, failing to report an accident, for failure to stop and over-driving road conditions.”
The first article goes into detail about the young man being a student at Dakota Wesleyan University and a member of the football team. The second article says nothing about the young man’s workplace or school affiliation. Is the first a case of bias against DWU? Or is the second a case of shoddy reporting? Or are both examples of bias and shoddy reporting? We contend that they are both, since in the first case the reporter had to learn that the student was a member of the football team from sources outside of the police report. In addition, he neglected to report that the student turned himself in.
Does the reporter have unshared issues with DWU? Or does he just derive pleasure from poking sticks in people’s eyes?
