Sioux Falls student suspended for fish oil pill back in school

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — A 15-year-old Sioux Falls middle school student suspended for giving an over-the-counter fish oil pill to a fellow classmate is back in school after his family complained the punishment was too harsh.

Nic Sutton had been given a 10-day suspension and ordered to undergo drug counseling as part of Memorial Middle School's zero tolerance policy on drugs.

Brandi Lantgen-Sutton is Nic Sutton's mother. She says school officials agreed to reduce the suspension to three days and reclassify the offense to insubordination. Nic Sutton must also undergo a drug prevention program.

Lantgen-Sutton says that although she agreed her son broke a school rule and should be punished, she felt classifying it as a drug offense was too harsh. She says she is pleased with the punishment reduction.
