Malloy hits game-winning shot to lift Parkston at state tournament

SPEARFISH — Parkston’s Marie Malloy hit a shot with one second left to lift Parkston over defending state champion Sisseton, 61-60, in the quarterfinals of the girls’ Class A state basketball tournament, Thursday night in Spearfish.

SPEARFISH — Parkston’s Marie Malloy hit a shot with one second left to lift Parkston over defending state champion Sisseton, 61-60, in the quarterfinals of the girls’ Class A state basketball tournament, Thursday night in Spearfish.

“We’ve had a very tough district and a very tough region with the draw we got, but kids played with a lot of heart,” Parkston head coach Rob Van Laecken said. “You’re never going to see kids play with more heart and more passion than these kids do right now.”

Malloy finished with a game high 27 points and said she was happy her Parkston won.

“That was incredible. I wanted to win so bad,” Malloy said.

Malloy hit a 3-pointer to put the Trojans up 3-0, but Sisseton answered with two field goals by Jordyn Kirk and two field goals and a free throw by Shelby Greeley to give The Redmen the lead 9-3.

Sisseton built their lead to 15-7 before field goals by McKenzie Weidenbach and Erica Herrold and two field goals by Malloy pulled the Trojans to within five points, 19-14, at the end of the first quarter.

Parkston went on a 12-3 run to start the second quarter.

A 3-pointers by Taylor Bormann, a field goal by Malloy, and back-to back 3-pointers by Herrold and Boormann gave the Trojans the lead 25-22.

The two teams battled back and forth, but the shooting of Malloy and Herrold kept the Trojans in front 33-32 at the half.

Sisseton began to take control in the second half extending their lead to 47-39, on a field goal by Danni Frederick.

Parkston road the hot shooting of Malloy to pull within two-points, 47-45 after three quarters.

Sisseton pushed it lead to 55-49 before a field goal by Herrold and a field goal and free throw by Malloy cut the Redmen’s lead to 55-54.

Field goals by Bormann and Alexis Horstman tied the game at 57.

Sisseton had a chance to put the game away at the end, but missed several free throws down the stretch.

Jordyn Kirk hit one of two free throws to put Sisseton up 60-59, with 8.6 seconds left on the clock.

After a Parkston time out, Malloy drove the length of the floor and hit a layup with one second left to give Parkston the win 61-60.

Herrold added 14 points for Parkston.

Macy Toelle had 15 point, Kirk 13 points, Shelby Greeley 12 points and Danni Frederick 10 points for Sisseton.

Parkston faces Miller tonight in the semifinals. Tip off is set for 7:45 p.m.
