State basketball first-round recap: Roosevelt tops Aberdeen

Rome had three of the Rough Riders’ six 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Roosevelt (17-7) also got 12 points and six rebounds from Lauren Kunz.
The Rough Riders were outshot from the field but made 24 of 28 free throws to Aberdeen Central’s 11-for-19.
Kelsey Hannigan and Samantha Knecht led the Golden Eagles (16-8) with eight points apiece.
Washington holds off O’Gorman
BROOKINGS (AP) — Ellie Benson scored 13 points and Sioux Falls Washington held off Sioux Falls O’Gorman 44-39 Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota girls Class AA basketball tournament.
Washington (19-4) led by 12 points in the third quarter, but O’Gorman cut it to two points late in the fourth quarter. Washington stole an inbound pass with 14 seconds left to ice it.
Benson was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Washington made 21 of 27 free throws. O’Gorman was perfect from the line but took just nine shots.
Chandler Nielsen had 14 points and five assists to lead O’Gorman (13-10). She was 5-for-5 from the line.
Brandon Valley beats RC Stevens
BROOKINGS (AP) — Allison Koehn and Heidi Hoff combined for 32 points, powering Brandon Valley to a 51-36 quarterfinal victory over Rapid City Stevens on Thursday at the South Dakota girls Class AA basketball tournament.
Koehn scored a game-high 19 points, hit three of the Lynx’s six 3-pointers and grabbed 10 rebounds. Hoff added 13 points, a team-high 11 rebounds and six assists for Brandon Valley (17-7).
Katie Klapprodt and Margaret McCloud paced the Raiders (13-10) with nine points apiece. McCloud finished with a game-high 17 rebounds.
Brandon Valley shot 34 percent from the field while holding Stevens to 27.5 percent.
Miller gets past Vermillion 57-50
SPEARFISH (AP) — Alexis Watts had 20 points and Miller rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to beat Vermillion 57-50 Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota girls Class A basketball tournament.
Watts was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line for the Rustlers (21-2), who shot 57 percent from the field to advance to the state semifinals. The Rustlers hit 74 percent in the second half.
Jansen Hunter had 11 points and Tara Parmely 10 for Miller. Mallory Fischer had nine points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Kelly Amundson was the only Vermillion (18-5) player in double figures with 12 points.
Elkton-Lake Benton beats CWL
SPEARFISH (AP) — Megan Krogman’s 15 points and five rebounds led Elkton-Lake Benton to a 60-40 win over Clark-Willow Lake Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota girls Class A basketball tournament.
The Elks went on a 17-2 run in the second quarter to take a 28-12 lead at the half. They outscored Clark-Willow Lake 17-8 in the third quarter.
Krogman was 6-for-10 from the field and handed out five assists. Cassidy Gebhart had 13 points and Stephanie Johnson 10 for the Elks.
Mackenize Huber led Clark-Willow Lake with 22 points. Chynna Stevens had 13 assists.
St. Thomas More beats Pine Ridge 73-45 at State A
SPEARFISH (AP) — St. Thomas More jumped out to a big first-half lead and cruised to a 73-45 win over Pine Ridge in the first round of the South Dakota girls Class A basketball tournament on Thursday.
The Cavaliers (22-2) raced out to a 37-22 halftime lead and never looked back.
Caitlin Duffy made 15 of 16 free throws and finished with 28 points to lead all scorers. She also led St. Thomas More with seven rebounds and six assists. Alexys Swedlund had 17 points.
The Cavaliers were 30-for-41 from the free throw line while Pine Ridge (17-6) made just 10 of 18 shots from the line.
Summit beats Parker 69-43
HURON (AP) — Presley O’Farrell’s 22 points helped Summit to a 69-43 win over Parker Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota girls Class B basketball tournament.
O’Farrell was 7-for-10 from the field and from the free throw line for the defending state champion Eagles (22-2).
Shenia Steinocker added 14 points and Logan O’Farrell 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Amber Dysthe led Parker (16-8) with 11 points.
Sully Buttes beats Edgemont 47-26
HURON (AP) — Sully Buttes pulled away in the second half to post a 47-26 quarterfinal victory over Edgemont in the South Dakota girls Class B basketball tournament on Thursday.
Karlea Stahl and Taryn Colson scored 12 points apiece, and Taylor Hackett chipped in 11 for the Chargers (22-2).
Sully Buttes outscored Edgemont 31-13 in the second half.
The Moguls (18-5) got nine points apiece from Kristi Porter and Lacy Stevens.
Sully Buttes shot 44 percent from the field while holding Edgemont to 23 percent.
Faith beats Estelline 51-41 at State B tourney
HURON (AP) — Tearnee Nelson scored 23 points to lead Fait to a 51-41 win over Estelline on Thursday in a first-round game at the South Dakota girls Class B basketball tournament.
Nelson made 8 of 15 shots from the field and drained two 3-pointers for the Longhorns (21-3). She was the only Faith player in double figures.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 13-2 lead after one quarter. They led wire to wire to earn a berth in the state semifinals.
Mikayla Saathoff had a team-high 11 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Redmen (19-4).
