While the mayor’s race is filling with candidates, so far there is only one candidate for each of the four Mitchell City Council seats up for election June 5.
The terms of councilmen Jeff Smith, the council president who represents Ward 4; Marty Barington, the council vice president who represents Ward 3; Travis Carpenter, who represents Ward 2; and Mel Olson, who represents Ward 1, end this summer.
Smith, Barington and Olson are running for re-election and have picked up their petitions, but Carpenter said he will not seek another term.
Randy Doescher has picked up petitions to run for Carpenter’s seat in Ward 2.
Mitchell has an eight-member council, with each ward having two council members. The council terms are for three years.
City voters will also decide on June 5 if they agree with a council decision made last fall to change three one-way streets to two-way traffic. The decision was referred to a public vote.
