LETTER: Wake up and support babies
How could anyone stop a life or intentionally kill a baby in the womb that was partially or completely born?By: Marie Bettmeng, Alexandria
To the Editor:
Having recently returned home from Rapid City, I had the opportunity to spend some time with the newborn daughter of my son and his wife. As I gazed at that precious little baby, I thought, “How could anyone stop a life or intentionally kill a baby in the womb that was partially or completely born?”
These are the facts about babies in the womb. At 11-12 weeks, the unborn child is more than 2 inches long and the heart has been beating for approximately two months. The body organs are present and there is extreme sensitivity to pain, sound, pressure, heat and light.
There is a great desire for adoptive children in our country. Approximately 2 million families are currently ready and waiting to adopt, while only about 24,000 babies are placed for adoption every year. The United States is experiencing a negative population growth, which will ultimately mean a heavy financial burden for future generations.
Thirty nine years ago (in 1973), the Supreme Court voted Roe v. Wade in favor of abortion, thereby allowing a woman to have an abortion any time during her pregnancy. This has resulted in a significant increase in abortions. Now, to help educate us of the consequences, several cities conduct “Walks for Life” on Jan. 22 each year. The liberal media gives this little or no coverage, as witnessed by the recent walks.
We, the public, have the ability to change our laws, giving us the choice to vote for pro-life candidates. I urge you to stand in support of the precious babies who have no choice.
