Kernel girls beat Aberdeen, headed back to state

The Mitchell girls’ basketball team won its second straight District 3AA title Thursday, defeating Aberdeen Central 59-48 at the Corn Palace.

The Mitchell girls’ basketball team won its second straight District 3AA title, defeating Aberdeen Central 59-48 Thursday at the Corn Palace.

The Kernels (21-1) qualified for the state tournament with the win.

Mitchell’s Kerri Young had a team-high 24 points and Macy Miller had 23.

The Kernels trailed 16-13 after the first quarter, but Mitchell outscored Aberdeen 46-32 through the next 24 minutes.

Mitchell shot 44 percent from the field and had six turnovers to Aberdeen Central’s six.

The Class AA state girls’ basketball tournament is March 8-10 and will be held in Brookings. This is the second straight year the Kernels are headed to the state tournament.
