RAPID CITY (AP) — A Rapid City committee is recommending that officials approve $1.4 million in city funds to buy 4.5 acres of downtown property for a new fire station and administration building.
The City Council is to take up the matter at its meeting Monday night.
The money is part of the city's capital improvement program and had previously been set aside for construction of a fire station on the city's east side in 2014 or 2015. Fire Chief Mike Maltaverne says development forecast for east Rapid City hasn't occurred at the rate expected. He says a new downtown station has become more of a priority.
The current downtown fire station is 37 years old.
