Yankton voters reject opt-out measure again

YANKTON (AP) — Voters in the Yankton school district have defeated an opt-out of the state property tax freeze for the second time in less than a year.

The media reports that Tuesday's vote was 58 percent opposed and 42 percent in favor. About 4,700 people voted.

School Board member Chris Specht says he's disappointed with the outcome. Opposition spokesman Charles Murphy says people are tired of taxes.

School district officials say they face a shortfall in their next budget of $2.2 million. The two-year opt-out measure would have provided an additional $1.4 million per year.

Voters last May defeated a measure that would have generated an additional $4.1 million per year for the school district. That vote was 66 percent opposed and 34 percent in favor.
