KADOKA (AP) — A dog that survived a South Dakota car crash that killed its owner from Montana has been united with the late master's three sons from North Carolina.
Lester, Bobby Jr. and Troy Allgood traveled to Kadoka in southwest South Dakota to pick up their father's belongings and Ladybug, his 12-year-old Australian shepherd.
Bobby Allgood Sr., 74, of Reed Point, Mont., was killed in the Feb. 6 crash along Interstate 90. Ladybug ran away after the crash but spent the next nine days revisiting the site while eluding capture.
A Rapid City mother and son eventually coaxed the dog into their car, though she briefly escaped again while being put in a Kadoka dog kennel. Police Chief Forrest Davis eventually boarded Ladybug at his home until the brothers arrived to pick her up Monday.
"I haven't dared to let her off the chain . because I don't want to have to chase her again," Davis told the media. "She's fast for an old dog."
The Allgood brothers gave Davis a gold cross engraved with their thanks.
"Here in Kadoka, I think there must be great people to help us get my daddy's dog back," Lester Allgood said.
Bobby Allgood Jr. called the city "a very special place."
