YANKTON — The Marlin girls’ junior varsity hockey team took third place in the state tournament on Sunday.

For their first game on Friday, the Marlins defeated the Rushmore Thunder 2-1. Bailey Hohn led the Marlins with one goal and one assist. Alexandra Jones added one goal and Cassidy Stucky had one assist. Goalie Cara Beck had seven saves on eight shots.

On Saturday, the Marlins lost to the Oahe Capitals 2-0. Beck had 16 saves on 12 shots.

Head coach Eric Hohn said the main reason the team struggled against the Capitals was because Pierre had more experienced players on its team.

“(Oahe) had its varsity goalie play and they played a couple of players that probably shouldn’t be playing at the JV level,” Hohn said.

“(Oahe) played pretty well and we just couldn’t score a goal on their goalie.”

On Sunday, the Marlins defeated the Brookings Rangers in their last game of the tournament 3-2.

Jacey Brunsen, Kassi Barington and Michelle Wyatt each scored goals for the Marlins. Brunsen and Wyatt each had one assist. Emily Spates added two assists and Stuckey had one assist.

Hohn said he was pleased with the way his team played over the weekend and that he’s looking forward to next season.

“We took third place, that’s not where we were seeded but that’s what happens in the state tournament,” Hohn said.

“(Next year) will be another good season. We won’t lose anyone we’ll gain girls so that’s a good thing.”
