The Mitchell Christian girls’ basketball team fell to the Corsica/Stickney Jaguars 65-47 in a girls’ District 10B semifinal game Friday at the Corn Palace.
Mitchell Christian’s Becca Glanzer opened the game with a banked 3-point shot, and after that it was back and forth between the Jaguars and Eagles. With about a minute left in the first quarter, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run and hit a 3-point buzzer-beater from Khiree Held, which gave MCHS a 13-7 lead.
Hope Menning scored the first points of the second quarter, and the Jaguars were able to chip away at Mitchell Christian’s lead, tying the game at 19 with four minutes left to go in the half. Corsica/Stickney led going into halftime 27-22.
“(I told the team) we just had to come out and play hard those first four minutes to establish our game,” Corsica/Stickney coach Lorisa Broughton said of her halftime speech.
That’s exactly what Corsica/Stickney did during the third quarter, and it didn’t miss a single basket, outscoring Mitchell Christian to further its lead.
Eagles head coach Jackie Van Laecken said she felt her team ended its season on a positive note, and that she’s excited for next season.
“The girls played a really good, hard-fought game,” Van Laecken said. “We just didn’t have as deep of a bench as (Corsica/Stickney), but they fight hard, they work hard and next year we’ll be a little more experienced, and we’re excited for it.”
Individual statistics were not reported to The Daily Republic.
Mitchell Christian ended its season with an 8-13 record.
Corsica/Stickney is 12-8 and will face off against Kimball/White Lake today for the girls’ District 10B championship game at the Corn Palace. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
