Concealed carry permit bill passes SD Senate panel

PIERRE (AP) — A Senate committee has approved a bill that allows motorists with a valid South Dakota driver's license to carry a concealed weapon without a permit within state borders.

The Senate State Affairs Committee voted 5-3 Friday in favor of the measure that would let people to skip the application process as long as they don't leave the state.

Supporters say the bill removes the $10 permit fee burden and say driver's licenses requirements are stringent enough. Opponents say driver's license applications don't consider mental health records and argue that permits are denied for valid reasons.

The bill, which carries no support from gun groups or organizations, now moves to the Senate floor.
