HURON — Mitchell High School qualified 10 wrestlers to the state tournament at Saturday’s Region 3A meet.

The Kernels’ Dylon Bollock (113), Jason Greenway (160) and Brent Havlik (170) each won their weight class at the tournament.

Bollock beat Huron’s Chet Glanzer in the finals by an 8-4 decision. Greenway picked up a 10-2 major decision over Huron’s Hartman Katz in the finals and Havlik earned a default win over Pierre’s Kyle Sarringar in the finals.

Mitchell took fourth place with 146 points. Pierre won the region with 206 points, Huron was second with 192.5 and Aberdeen Central was third with 155.5.

“I’m real happy with the 10 kids we’re taking,” Mitchell coach Travis Carpenter said. “I would have liked to get all of them there, but we’re looking forward to the state meet and we’ve got to be ready to go.”

Alex Herrick (120), Lakin Neugebauer (126) and Nick Kummer (152) each took second place. Landon Neugebauer (138) and Robert McCardle (285) took third and Logan Parr (182) and Tanner Henkel (145) each took fourth.

Henkel, Parr and McCardle are all first-time state tournament qualifiers.

“It was good for them to step up at the right time,” Carpenter said. “Now, hopefully, we can get them some wins at state.”

Carpenter specifically mentioned McCardle’s day, saying the heavyweight beat two wrestlers he’s lost to a combined eight times this year.

McCardle beat Aberdeen Central’s Zach Fleming 3-1 in the first round and beat Huron’s Raleigh Jungemann in the third-place match.

“He really stepped up for the occasion,” Carpenter said.

Chamberlain finished in fifth place with 30 points. Senior heavyweight Josh Valandra took first and junior 126-pounder Russell Felicia took third.
