Seven men will be inducted to the South Dakota High School Wrestling Hall of Fame at the Class A and Class B state wrestling tournaments next weekend.
Mike Pankratz, Bob Lowery, Al Bowar, Hazen Bye, Ken Ruml, John Schiley and Brian DeJong will be inducted at the state tournaments next weekend. The Class A tournament is being held Feb. 24-25 in Aberdeen. The Class B tournament is being held Feb. 24-25 in Rapid City.
Pankratz was a three-time state champion for Freeman from 1986 to 1988. He was a four-year starter at SDSU and was the school’s first four-time All-American.
Lowery is the acting assistant director for the South Dakota High School Activities Association. He has been director of the state wrestling tournaments and wrestling rules interpretation.
Bowar graduated from Parkston and was the first SDIC champion for USD-Springfield. He started the wrestling program in Garretson and led the school to 10 conference titles.
Bye wrestled for Vermillion and was a six-time state qualifier and three-time state champion. He twice had undefeated seasons.
Ken Ruml took over the Howard wrestling program in 1976 and retired at the end of last year. He won 23 district championships, 11 region titles and three state championships. He coached 18 state champions and holds the state record for a 51-match winning streak.
He was the national coach of the year in 1996 and USA coach of the year in 2000.
Schiley was a three-time state champion for Webster. He also coached the school and led it to a state title in 2005 and 2006.
DeJong wrestled at Clear Lake, where he was a five-time state qualifier and two-time state champion. He wrestled at SDSU.
