DWU men drop game to Northwestern
Dakota Wesleyan University’s Mike Lee had 30 points in a 93-81 loss to Northwestern College Wednesday night in a Great Plains Athletic Conference men’s basketball game.
ORANGE CITY, IOWA — Dakota Wesleyan University’s Mike Lee had 30 points in a 93-81 loss to Northwestern College Wednesday night in a Great Plains Athletic Conference men’s basketball game.
Lee’s 30 points and Carde Pennington’s 22 combined for 52 of the Tigers’ 81 points. DWU is 7-12 in the GPAC and 15-14 overall.
DWU head coach Shane Murphy said his team knew if it won either one of its final two remaining games in the regular season, it would be guaranteed a GPAC postseason tournament berth. After losing Wednesday night, the Tigers finish their regular season on Saturday against Briar Cliff.
There are other scenarios for the Tigers if they lose Saturday, but if they win, they’re automatically in the postseason.
“We just needed one this week,” Murphy said. “We didn’t get this one done, and now we have Briar Cliff.”
Northwestern had a 40-25 edge in rebounding Wednesday night. The Red Raiders were led by Ben Miller’s 22 points. Northwestern shot 56 percent from the field but trailed 37-36 at halftime.
The Tigers shot 46 percent from the field, but didn’t have another scorer in double figures besides Lee and Pennington.
“It was a great effort by those guys shooting the ball for us,” Murphy said. “Our biggest problem was not being able to compete on the boards and coming up with loose balls. We also had a few of those quick shots and turnovers that led to run-outs for transition 3-pointers.”
Justin Nelson had nine points for DWU and Jake Kneeland and Jordan Long each had seven. Luke Bamberg and Long each had a team-high six rebounds.
