Icy conditions in the Mitchell area contributed to many traffic accidents this morning.
Reports overheard on a police scanner indicated multiple vehicles in the ditch along state Highway 37 south of Mitchell, and scattered wrecks in other locations.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for seven counties, including Davison, until 9 a.m.
The NWS said weak low pressure was moving east over the area, producing scattered freezing rain. Although the rain was light, areas of icing were expected to continue developing.
Areas of light freezing rain were forecast to persist until mid-morning, when any lingering precipitation was predicted to change to light snow. Ice accumulations of 0.01 to 0.02 inch were possible.
